Bringing Rural Communities – “From Darkness to life”

Cataract remains the leading cause of avoidable blindness in India, especially among older adults and rural populations where access to quality eye care is limited. Studies show that cataract accounts for a majority of blindness and severe visual impairment, and its prevalence rises significantly with age. In rural Karnataka, including regions like Kalaburagi, many individuals over 50 suffer from cataract-related vision loss, a condition that can be successfully treated with timely surgery—yet barriers such as lack of awareness, poverty, distance to services, and fear of surgery often leave these cases unaddressed.

Effata, an eye care initiative by Mother Theresa Hospital, steps  into this gap with a compassionate and practical response for economically backward families. Through village-level screening camps, Effata identifies individuals with cataract and other visual impairments, facilitates free or subsidized surgeries, and distributes spectacles to improve vision and quality of life. By bringing services closer to home and demystifying eye care, Effata helps people see clearly again—restoring independence, dignity, and productivity.

To date, MTCH through Effata program has conducted 222 successful cataract surgeries and distributed over 300 pairs of spectacles, giving light, transforming vision and futures across rural communities. The program’s village camps not only detect cases early but also educate families about eye health, driving early help-seeking behavior and reducing preventable blindness.
